Never made a quilt before? No problem. Here you will find step-by-step instructions and tutorials to help you make, Don't Fence Me In, a crib-size modern quilt.

Using a traditional quilt block, the rail fence, and choosing bold colors with a large white background we will make a modern quilt. Let's get started!

Ironing Tutorial

Iron all fabric before beginning to remove all wrinkles.

Cutting Tutorial

Using a rotary cutter and mat, cut 2 strips from each of the color fabrics (yellow, green, aqua, blue) that measure 2" by 42" (Width of Fabric-WOF).

From the background fabric (white) cut strips 6 ½" by 42" (WOF). Sub-cut white fabric into 6 ½" squares.

Sewing Tutorial

Using an accurate ¼" seam, sew one yellow strip to one green strip lengthwise to make a 3 ½" by 42" long strip. Press seam. Then add the aqua strip and press. Finally, add the blue strip and press.

The final strip should measure 6 ½" by 42" (WOF). Sub-cut strips into 6 ½" squares, you should have 6 blocks. Repeat with the second group of 2" strips to have a total of 12 blocks.

Assembly Tutorial

Layout the blocks according to the pattern. Begin sewing the first row together, 1 color block to 1 white block. Pay attention to which color is sewn to the white block, orientation will affect the design. Continue sewing 4 additional white blocks on the first row and press. Sew 2nd row of blocks in one horizontal strip, press, and attach to the first row according to the pattern. Repeat with next four rows (42 squares total) to match up with the pattern.
