Getting Started

Here are some basic tools you will need to start making your first modern quilt. I have shown a variety of tools in each category. I am not endorsing or selling any of these featured items. You may already have some of these products which will work for you or purchase the product that best suits your needs and abilities.

Sewing Machine

There are hundreds of sewing machines to choose from, with thousands and thousands of stitches and features. The only feature that you really need is a straight stitch that will produce an accurate 1/4" seam allowance. Many basic machines can do this, and they start at very reasonable prices. Visit your local quilt store or sewing machine store to get more information.

Scissors

A good pair of fabric scissors is a must, and a smaller pair is wonderful for cutting threads and small pieces of fabric. NEVER USE YOUR FABRIC SCISSORS ON PAPER; IT DULLS THE BLADES.

Acrylic Rulers

There are a variety of acrylic quilting rulers. Be sure it is a quilting ruler with 1/8th inch marking. It is best to get one that is at least 24 inches long to cut the width of fabrics and then a smaller one, maybe 8 to 12 inches long, for cutting smaller pieces. There is no such thing as having too many rulers.

Fabric

Of course you need fabric for your quilting projects. 100% cotton is the best to use in your quilts. Visit your local quilt store for the see and touch experience or there are many online sites where you can see all the latest collections and purchasing options.

Rotary Cutters

Used for cutting multiple layers of fabric at one time. Used primarily with acrylic quilting rulers.

Irons

A good iron is a must for pressing the seams on each block and then pressing the entire finished quilt to be sure it lays flat before the quilting is done. A small second iron nice to have to keep close to your sewing machine for small applications but not necessary.

Notions

You will always need a seam ripper for those unplanned errors, thread, pins, a marking tool, clips are nice but not a must-have, and 100% cotton thread in 40 or 50 weight.

Cutting Mat

It is essential to have a self healing cutting mat to use with the rotary cutter. It provides markings for accurate cutting and will protect the underneath surface from being damaged by the rotary cutter.
